WAN board approves merger with Ifra

The merger of the two main news publishing associations, the World Association of Newspapers and Ifra, has moved a step closer after the WAN board approved the deal. Later this week the Ifra board is expected to formally approve the plan at a meeting and the merger could take place as early as next month. Speculation surrounding a possible merger has been rife for years because of the similar goals of the organisations. Insiders described the two organisations as 'a good fit'. WAN, an industry body representing more than 18,000 publications, hosts the leading annual industry conferences and is a keen advocate on newspaper industry policy. Ifra specialises in training and development of the news business. Once the merger is formerly approved, the Ifra president, Horst Pirker, is expected to be named first vice-president of this new body. The organisation is likely to be run from two centres. WAN's existing headquarters is in Paris and Ifra's base is in Darmstadt, near Frankfurt. (The Guardian)
