Spain press group joins call for EU aid to media
Spain's FAPE journalists association joined the call by the European Federation of Journalists to European Union authorities to provide public funds for the press. FAPE said Monday that the European group of the International Federation of Journalists last week addressed the president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, and political groups of the European Parliament to ask them to take measures protecting news companies faced with the sharp drop in advertising revenues. The head of the European Federation of Journalists, Arne Koening, asked for action to aid the media 'before it's too late,' since journalism 'is a mainstay of European democracy and has as much right or more to be protected as the banks and car companies that have received billions of euros.' FAPE recalled Monday that between June 2008 and April this year, a total of 2,221 journalists have lost their jobs in Spain because of the recession. (EFE)
