South Africa’s Sunday Times editor to be arrested
South Africa's Sunday Times editor Mondli Makhanya and a senior journalist are
expecting to be arrested for alleged illegal possession of the Minister
of Health's medical records. The Times reported on Sunday that Makhanya
and deputy managing editor, Jocelyn Maker, would be booked this week and
"hauled off" to Cape Town in connection with charges of theft and
contravening Section 17 of the National Health Act. The anticipated
action follows reports in August about the "shocking behaviour" of
Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang while she was a patient at a
Cape Town clinic. "Since the investigation into the missing records
began," the Times reported "several sources, including intelligence and
government officials, have warned the Sunday Times that Makhanya and
Maker's cellphones, among others, are being tapped. "They also said that
operatives around the country were trying to dig up 'dirt' on the editor
and the journalists involved in the story." The paper reported further
that senior government officials and ANC leaders had also privately
warned for several months that President Thabo Mbeki's inner circle was
unhappy about critical reporting by the Sunday Times. (Independent Online South Africa)
