Rights group makes Kazakh media appeal
A prominent watchdog group has called on Kazakhstan's government to stop pursuing independent reporters with libel suits. The Committee to Protect Journalists says six independent news outlets and their reporters were targeted by more than 60 defamation lawsuits last year in the former Soviet Central Asian state. The group in a statement late Monday cited Kazakh media rights group Adil Soz as saying at least 18 of the libel plaintiffs were government officials. Media freedom in Kazakhstan is coming under increased scrutiny as the country prepares to take the chairmanship next year of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. (AP)
