Number of journalists killed up 244 per cent over 5 years, media watchdog says

Reporters Without Borders says the number of journalists being killed on the job is soaring. The Paris-based watchdog group says 86 reporters were killed on the job in 2007. That was a 244 per cent increase compared with 2002 when 25 were killed. It says the increase has been largely due to the Iraq war. Iraq accounted for 47 of the deaths in 2007 and all but one of those killed were Iraqi nationals. The sole exception was a Russian reporter. It adds that most of those killed in Iraq were ‘deliberately targeted.’ Other deadly countries for journalists in 2007 included Somalia, with eight reporters killed; Pakistan, with six deaths; and Sri Lanka, with three. Another media watchdog, the Brussels-based International Federation of Journalists, put the number of media workers killed in 2007 at 134. Their figure included both journalists and those who help them do their jobs. The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, which uses stricter definitions, said in December that 64 journalists in 17 countries were killed in 2007. (Canadian Press)
