Japan’s NHK to resume live sumo broadcasts
Japan’s public broadcaster, NHK, has decided to resume live broadcasts of sumo after cancelling coverage of a tournament in July. The broadcaster took the unprecedented step of cancelling live coverage of July's Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament after revelations that sumo wrestlers had illegally bet on baseball games. NHK broadcast only a recorded digest of the tournament. NHK President Shigeo Fukuchi said that the Autumn Tournament starting on 12 September would be aired live as usual. He said NHK reached the decision after examining a declaration issued by the Japan Sumo Association to express its resolve to sever ties with criminal gangs. The association also presented specific reform measures to clean its own house. Mr Fukuchi said NHK hoped viewers would understand its decision, and that if another scandal occurred in the sumo world, NHK might consider re-suspending live broadcasts.
