Google Moves Toward Settlement of European Antitrust Investigation
The European Commission said on Tuesday that it had reached an “understanding” with Google that could lead to a settlement of an antitrust investigation into allegations that Google abused its dominance of the Internet search and advertising markets. “The commission considers Google’s proposals a good basis for further talks and has now reached a good level of understanding,” said commission spokesman, Antoine Colombani. He added that meetings on a more technical level would now be held to reach a settlement. The commission found after a nearly two-year inquiry that Google might have given its own products an edge over those of others while maintaining that it offered neutral results. Google’s search engine has a 90 percent market share in many big European markets, compared with less than 70 percent in the United States, where it is also under investigation. (The New York Times)
