Facebook used by half of the world’s Internet users, save Asia

Facebook's IPO filing reveals that, with the exception of Asia, Facebook connects more than half of the world's Internet users. Facebook's USD 5bnn IPO filing on Wednesday was built on the backs of 845 million users, the latest user count that Facebook provided. The company's monthly user numbers show three interesting points: first, the penetration that Facebook enjoys within the United States and Canada, unsurprisingly, is the highest of all of the geographies Facebook highlighted. The smallest is clearly Asia, in whose largest country, China, Facebook has "near 0 percent penetration," according to the filing. Second, Facebook has obviously become a worldwide phenomenon, with U.S./Canada also representing the smallest percentage of total users compared to Europe, Asia, and the rest of the world, including Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. Nearly a third - 31.2 percent, or 179 million - of the 572 million people who reside in the United States and Canada use Facebook. Europe ranks second in total penetration, with 229 million out of the region's 595 million people, or 38 percent, using the service. In Asia, Facebook counts 212 million users, just 5 percent of the 4.3 billion people who live there. And the rest of the world isn't much better; according to Facebook, 225 million use the service, or 11 percent of the 2.01 billion people who live there. The "rest of the world" region is Facebook's largest, with 27 percent of its total user base; Europe was second, with 27 percent. Asia and the U.S. and Canada represent 25 percent and 21 percent, respectively, of Facebook's users. (PC Mag)
