Dutch give EUR 6m to support cyber activists, internet freedom
The Netherlands is allocating €6m to boost 'internet freedom' and help cyber activists in countries where the population is oppressed. The Dutch Foreign minister Uri Rosenthal announced the cash help at the end of an international summit in The Hague on internet freedom. In a final declaration at the end of the summit, 14 countries (Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Estonia, Ghana, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, Mongolia, the Netherlands, Britain, United States, Sweden) agreed to 'promote the freedoms of expression, association, and peaceful assembly with respect to the Internet and connection technologies'. They also pledged to take action to work against the 'export and misappropriation of technologies for repressive ends, inappropriate requests for personal data for political purposes, and illegitimate blocking of content.' According to the Dutch newspaper Volkskrant, the EU will next year set up a EUR 125m fund to support cyber activism. (Dutch News)
