Beijing to expand its international media activities
The Chinese government has announced plans to dramatically increase its
foreign media activities. Beijing has reserved almost EUR 5m for the
project. The state-run Xinhua press agency will launch an international
television station modelled along the lines of the US' CNN and the Arab
Al Jazeera stations. Beijing has also set aside funding to upgrade The
People's Daily newspaper and the state-run CCTV television station; both
will become far more international and CCTV will start broadcasting in
Arabic and Russian. An article by propaganda chief Liu Yunshan,
published in the Communist Party's main ideological journal, said, 'it
has become an urgent strategic task for us to make our communication
capability match our international status'. Communist party officials
believe the new media outlets will help Beijing present its view on
world affairs and also counter what party officials see as negative
reporting on sensitive issues such as human rights and the situation in
Tibet. (Radio Netherlands/Media Network weblog)
