Anonymous threatens weekly mayhem for government and business websites

Hackers affiliated with the Anonymous online collective have promised to unleash regularly scheduled bouts of chaos, by attacking business and government-related websites every Friday. According to a 19 February post on the Anonops Communication site – a channel regularly used to provide news about the hacktivist group – Anonymous is set to kick of a campaign of weekly attacks. The group said its motivation for the attacks was to “[wipe] as many corrupt corporate and government systems off our internet.” The lack of a form hierarchy in Anonymous means any such claims have to be treated with a degree of caution – as no one member can claim to speak for the entire group. Nevertheless, the threat marks an escalation in its campaign to attack government and business websites. Since the start of 2012, Anonymous-affiliated hackers have published recordings between US and UK e-crime police, defaced Greek government websites, threatened to publish source code belonging to security firm Symantec and published log-on credentials for series of Israeli-owned industrial computer systems. The group has also started getting involved in protests against what it sees as anti-internet legislation such as ACTA, SOPA and PIPA, launching distributed denial of service attacks or compromising web-facing systems.
