Bridging the Gap Conference

10/07/08 - 11/07/08 , Birmingham, England

Forward-looking broadcasters have been working to recruiting their journalists from more ethnically diverse backgrounds for two decades. That commitment has manifested in a range of schemes and support packages. But the Broadcast Journalism Training Council described diversity as ‘journalism’s big problem’.

Much has been said and written on this issue. Bridging The Gap aims to go further, looking at what works and what doesn’t when it comes to getting young people into broadcast journalism, ensuring they succeed once they’re in, living with difference and allowing difference to be reflected in the output.

The conference will be held on at Birmingham City University School of Jewellery.

IPTV World Forum Eastern Europe 2008

20/10/08 - 21/10/08 , Budapest, Hungary

The number of digital TV households in Western Europe is going to grow from 61 million in 2006 to 116 million by the end of 2011, according to figures from Informa Telecoms & Media, representing 90 per cent growth over the period. The same research company predicts that in Eastern Europe, digital uptake will grow from 6.1 million digital TV homes in 2005 to just under 32 million households by the end of 2011, representing 520 per cent growth over the period. That will still leave Eastern Europe with only 23.4 per cent of television homes receiving digital services in five years time, compared with 75 per cent of Western European households at the end of the forecast period. These figures (all courtesy of Informa Telecoms & Media and taken from their reports ‘Eastern European TV’ and ‘Western European TV’) reinforce the impression that for IPTV operators targeting Eastern Europe, there is still everything to play for.

Informa calculated that 4.6 per cent of Eastern European TV homes received digital services in 2005, and the company’s figures clearly illustrate the potential in the region for the delivery of advanced services. They show that the number of digital TV homes in the Czech Republic and Hungary will grow eight-fold, with Romania witnessing a 10-fold increase. Eastern Europe’s current digital TV powerhouses, Poland and Russia, will see four-fold and nearly eight-fold digital TV growth respectively. Poland will have 6 million digital TV homes by the end of 2011 and Russia will have 10.6 million. But that still only represents 47 per cent digital penetration in Poland (by 2011) and 19.8 per cent in Russia.

IPTV World Forum Asia 2008

04/12/08 - 05/12/08 , Suntec, Singapore

IPTV World Forum Asia - 4th Annual Conference

Governments, regulators, telecoms and media companies across Asia look ready to develop television-over-IP because it offers greater reach than cable, more interactivity than satellite and draws upon economies of scale taken from the IP-centric information/communications industry. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that IP-based multimedia is the future of entertainment delivery in the region.

Asia already boasts some of the world’s most notable IPTV deployments - most of them represented at last year’s IPTV World Forum Asia. Held in China, that conference/exhibition uncovered some notable issues including the impact of video on voice/broadband churn and the potential divergence of the media market between mass-market family viewing and an online youth entertainment culture. It highlighted the extent to which IPTV is an engine for change, providing the catalyst for great telecoms companies to transform themselves from bandwidth suppliers to service providers.

This year, Asia’s premier IPTV conference/exhibition will be in Singapore and will gather together the companies and people who are driving IPTV across the region. As usual, the big issues concerning go-to-market strategies, business models and technology will be addressed by executives who have been at the heart of their company’s roll-outs. But the dominant themes for 2007 will be transformation, IPTV evolution and the entry into a new phase in IPTV’s development, when telcos and alternative broadband providers will stop playing ‘catch-up’ and start setting the media/communications agenda.

* Over 300 speakers from telecoms, cable and mobile operators and leading content owners
* Asia’s leading IPTV event - with over 2000 visitors anticipated to attend and over 80 exhibitors
* Operators speaking at the show include: MTNL, Singtel, PCCW, KT, Chunghwa Telecom, Shanghai Media Group, Pakistan Telecom (PTCL), NTT,
Telecom New Zealand, True Internet Thailand, City Telecom, Bharti Airtel, TT&T etc
* Discovery Channel, HBO, ESPN, BBC, Disney, Sony Pictures
* Industry party in one of Singapore’s leading venues
* Free exhibition only passes available

IPTV World Forum Latin America 2008

27/01/09 - 28/01/09 , Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The second annual IPTV World Forum Latin America finds local IPTV deployments moving forward rapidly, spurred on by continued strong growth in the number of broadband DSL subscribers in the region. Brasil Telecom (BrT) announced early in 2007 that it definitely plans to rollout its IPTV service in the second half of 2007, and many more large local telcos are also readying to launch their own services.

Brazilian telco Telemar is currently in the testing phase for its own IPTV service, and Spanish telco Telefonica plans to rollout its Imagenio service across Latin America under the name Speedy TV, having already passed 300,000 IPTV subscribers in its native Spain. Telmex, the incumbent Mexican telco, will launch its own IPTV service, called Prodigy Media, in Mexico during the middle of 2007, offering four channels and a film and video download service.

IPTV World Forum Latin America will look at the challenges and potential for IPTV services in Latin America, and introduce speakers who have successfully deployed services and who are playing a direct role in the local regulatory challenges. The number of IPTV users grew 166% globally in 2006 to reach 7.2mn worldwide, according to research by Infonetics Research, with total revenue projected to double each year for the next four years. The event will examine what role Latin America will play in this growth, and offer the opportunity to hear speakers directly involved in local regulatory issues, along with major local telcos, ISPs, broadcasters and content players.

Latin America’s Leading IPTV Event
* The conference will feature over 20 telcos and ISPs discussing IPTV service deployment issues
* Leading South American content players and broadcasters speaking
* Operators speaking at the show include: Brasil Telecom, VTR, Telefonica Internacional, Telefonica del Sur, Telecom Argentina, Anatel Brasil.
* Networking party for all conference delegates
